Come Look at What I Found I was back in baby's arms, the warm sun shining down on me Up the coastline north of here, a place I never thought I'd be Making plans for nothing much, staying up 'til dawn Until the scales fell, into a wishing well Sat up and turned around Come look at what I found Always been a runaway, can't stay anywhere too long Grass is greener on the other side, until the other side is gone Mop it up, hung my head then in a little while I saw a flash of light, in the dead of night Then a lonesome sound Come look at what I found Heard the door is talking to the ceiling The floorboards never say a word, I wonder how they're feeling? This narrow path once led me to a town that's not too far away I got there at my own pace but I never meant to stay Minutes passed then years went by, until the other night Around 12 o'clock, I thought I heard a knock It shook me to the ground Come look at what I found My sweetheart, She's leaving in the morning She comes and goes when she wants, she don't give any warning I like to keep a low profile, sometimes I'm walking on all fours And when I lay me down to sleep, I always bolt the doors Rain is falling on the roof, if I should drown Go into the hall, up against the wall Take a look around Go see what I found

The Likes of You Due to rumors and open threats They've posted guards and closed the set We don't worry, we wander 'round From scene to scene with our heads bowed down I am puzzled by the change in style and the useless things That we're asked to do For the likes of you. I'm up early but when I sleep I am well aware of the friends I keep Should somebody need to shout my name They'll be asked to leave, that would be a shame If and when I choose to play a part I'm paid handsomely Tell me, is that true For the likes of you? Did a simpleton write these lines? You think that's cruel? I was being kind We lost the feel and you missed your mark When you read the script were you in the dark? Call the lawyers, alert the press, spread the news around Gather revenue From the likes of you

Messy 03:23
Messy Girl you're so messy, trash everywhere I can't untangle the knots in your hair Friends don't come over, they stay away Don't ask 'em why, there's got nothing to say Girl, you're so messy My head is reeling when you get too close How am I feeling? Girl, is that a joke? It's half-past 3, can't you get up? You got my attention, ain't that enough? Girl, you're so messy The butcher, the baker, the cop on the beat The minstrels and little boy blue You better take it back out on the street Girl, that's what you ought to do Why you so messy? Look at your face Been cleaning for hours, look at this place Down in the gutter, back in your stall You won't lift a finger, you don't care at all Girl, you're so messy What you been doin' there in the dark? I want to start over but where do I start? Mama, she told me, daddy did too I shouldn't mess with a woman like you Girl, you're so messy

In Your Arms 03:22
In Your Arms Caught a glimpse of all the young men halfway down the street There are one or two you might want to meet I could send a message, tell them it's from you After all you've done for me what else can I do? Since you're all alone I fear you may come to harm I remember how it felt when you held me in your arms Things have changed, few things are the way they used to be I have changed as well, maybe you can see A certain hesitation in words I try to say And when I'm by your side something's in the way Even so I am still enchanted by your charms I remember how it felt when you held me in your arms Verse and rhyme, can they do justice to your smile? I have to go before too long but I can stay a while Isn't it a shame, how things have come to pass? Foolish are the ones who claim love can never last Though I hate to leave, it's my heart that I must guard I remember how it felt when you held me in your arms

Since I Let My Baby Down We had dreams like all young lovers should Tried to make 'em all come true, we did the best we could When I think about the good times that we had Don't it seem like such a shame to watch good love go bad? Now I'm heartbroken Since I let my baby down I remember the day that we first met I'd never seen a girl like her, how could I forget? She touched my heart, she meant so much to me Now the love that we both shared is just a memory And I'm heartbroken Since I let my baby down Had my chance now it's gone away This place is empty and it's cold She left here and she's gone to stay Won't be coming back, I been told - that's what I been told If there's someone who's standing' next to you Someone you can count on, whose love is ever true Hold 'em close, don't do what I've done I lost my way, turned my back even though she was the one And I'm heartbroken since I let my baby... A little bit more soft spoken since I let my baby... I'm heartbroken since I let my baby down I think about her every day The things she'd do and the things she'd say I dream about her every night Without my baby, nothing's right That girl is always on my mind I wish that I could turn back time...turn back the hands of time

Let's Ask Anna They got a merry-go-round and a jungle jim If you bring some extra money they'll let me and my partner back in There's a big dance floor and a swimming pool There's a haunted house that closes after ten as a rule Last time I went I saw a Rock & Roll show Let's ask Anna if she wants to go I got a connection behind the dunk & dive She can hook us all up if maybe we can get there by five I saw the tallest man dancing with the bearded girl I saw a snake pit in the middle of the tilt the whirl All sales are final but even so Lets ask Anna if she wants to go? Maybe she will, maybe she won't I'm hoping she can make the time They got a long list of dos and don'ts You'll never get in if you step outta line Shouting instructions from the back of the car Always gotta be in control Riding down the rails of the shooting star These nickel-dime rides are takin' their toll On the caterpillar and the loop the loop In the shooting gallery, ain't nobody bulletproof In the hall of mirrors doing what your mama does Take your hands out of my pockets when we're floating down the tunnel of love Why don't you tell me something I don't know Let's ask Anna if she wants to go

String of Pearls Cotton candy, a string of pearls Wrapped around a velvet band On the rooftop, high above the city Walkin' hand in hand Better watch your step, I don't see a net Down below And if you should fall, I won't know who to call Or where to go Birthday wishes, a long list of callers There things to do Make a selection, they've ordered many flowers And they're all for you But if, by chance, you slip then you might bruise your lip, Hold on tight I heard the rumor mill is saying Johnny will Be there tonight If you dance for hours, in the pouring rain Never mind the showers, darling, don't complain 'Round the corner a bit of icing's Fallen on your satin dress In the ballroom, another misadventure Isn't it a mess? It's a little late, better change the date To Wednesday week Watch your temper dear, it seems the walls have ears When you speak No more conversation, now the time has come No more hesitation, it's nearly half past one

I Never Went Back The rain in South Texas washes towns away Sometimes it looks like midnight in the middle of the day Buildings are all broke down, sidewalks are cracked I went there once, I never went back Over in the great Northwest, I know They make plans to leave when the wind starts to blow Some are living on the street out there, others live in shacks I passed through once, I never went back Skyscrapers line up on the Eastern shore They're all lined up like they were before Stole a car one time in Brooklyn Heights, I think it was a Cadillac Drove it home and I never went back When the Delta starts to throw its weight around Folks'll pray to God with their heads bowed down I was asked to leave, it's true, they didn't even let me unpack Headed out and I never went back The Midwest farmer's daughter makes you feel alright When the morning comes the sun is shining bright A little too bright for me and I don't I like it like that If I can find a way, I'll never come back
9.
The Third Party The music shows and people out on the town Wearing fancy clothes and glittering evening gowns By the bright lights there were many sights to see 'Til a third party took my girl away from me She had golden hair and a gleam was in her eyes Everybody stared when we went walking by I wish things were the way they used to be 'Til a third party took my girl away from me Across the room I see the dancers A woman talks a young man answers Arm in arm, they turn and walk away Perhaps I should have stood my ground When that stranger came around Chances are, she'd still be here today Maybe I'll find someone new Maybe I'll find someone true Who's heart can not be swayed but until then Late at night I climb the stairs Recalling times when she was there And thinking of the things that might have been
10.
Find Yourself Another Man Let's dance Dance the night away until the dawn Where's my baby? I wonder where she's gone? Gotta move Can't stand still, jumping all around Set it up and then we'll tear it down What you trying t'say? I don't understand Why you in my way? Find yourself another man You're cracking up I'm not gonna leave, I'm gonna shout I'm staying here until they kick me out Skin to skin On the dance floor with my hands up high Thought I saw my baby walking by What you gonna do? You do what you can Gotta tell you true, find yourself another man Had enough Up until I want a little more Up until I'm face down on the floor Can't you see I just want to tear the world apart Ever since my baby broke my heart? I don't need the time, I don't want to hold your hand I just want to grind, find yourself another man

Not Lately 03:04
Not Lately Last night the streets were filled with noise, a crowd had gathered in the square Some were singing, others danced, others were just standing there I watched from my ringside seat and raised a glass to those below Have you ever seen such things? If you have, tell me so Not lately, but I wonder That sound you hear, my dear, could that be thunder? I saw a girl with long black hair, flesh unfit for dogs to eat Dark brown eyes, dressed in red, saying things I can't repeat I was in the Diamond Room, the Tiger's Paw from days gone by Have you been there, tell me true, and, if not, tell me why Not lately, and I'm hoping Although they swore, those friends of yours were joking Isn't that a melody, an odd and unfamiliar sound The echo of another song, that I heard last night in town Played for young men from the East to a nearly empty hall Have you seen them, were you there? Have you heard of them at all? Not lately, but I been thinking I could be wrong but this ship we're on is sinking Not lately, not lately I've been up indeed, there is no need to wake me

about

"This is an excellent record by Maurice Mattei & the Tempers - which seems to be a pattern that this artist repeats indefinitely. Listen for yourselves and we are sure you will be convinced of the talents of this brilliant musician."
- Rootstime Belgium

"…his 21st release, the excellent full-length 'Celebrity Issue'."
- Mike Breen, City Beat Magazine

"Another gem."
- Eric Supparo, Cri Du Coyote (France)

"…with 'Celebrity Issue' Mattei has evolved into a gifted songwriter and a singular talent."
- Brian Baker, City Beat Magazine

"You can hold the best of Maurice Mattei’s material to the highest songwriting standards. His “Set The World On Fire” would not only fit fine on Bob Dylan’s Love And Theft album, it would be a highlight. Butch Hancock could claim as his own the pivotal line from the title cut to Mattei’s theatrical song-cycle “Western Skies”: 'Everything’s different now, but nothing’s new.' "

about

Maurice Mattei Cincinnati, Ohio

Musically, everything I do revolves around songwriting. I began writing in the mid '70s, took a long break and started into it again in the late '80s. It was then that I found my own approach. I was influenced by the narratives in old Rock & Roll songs, folk & country tunes, and swing-era standards. My songs became more riff-oriented when I started the Tempers but not much changed lyrically. ... more
